yes i do believe that your parents did intervene for the sake of your guests, but I'm a mum & if my kid planned to cook dinner for me & friends or whoever, I'd let them & it wouldn't matter if it tasted good or not like you said at least you tried, because for me if my kid even suggested to cook dinner at all would be a 'KODAK' moment, i wouldn't even be in the kitchen i'd be supervising from the kitchen window!! your parents should be proud that you even wanted to do it. BUT seriously parents will always be parents...& when you get older you'll be just like them to, trust me been there done that! And no you didnt over react.
